Last checked: 10 October 2026. This guide explains how Maharashtra residents can check senior-citizen identity documents, health cover, travel concessions, pensions and other support. Rules and application windows can change; use the official links and confirm your eligibility before relying on a benefit.
Quick answer: Maharashtra residents aged 60 or above can apply for a Senior Citizen Certificate through the Aaple Sarkar service. The certificate is useful as age and identity proof, but it is not itself a universal discount card or health-insurance policy. Each concession or scheme has separate eligibility rules.
What is the Maharashtra Senior Citizen Certificate?
The Maharashtra certificate records senior-citizen status, generally from age 60. It can help establish age when applying for services that accept it. The certificate alone does not automatically provide free hospital treatment, pension, bus or train concessions, or tax relief. Those benefits require separate qualification and documents.
Apply through the Aaple Sarkar citizen services portal and search for “Senior Citizen Certificate.” The listed service is handled through the revenue administration/Tahsildar channel. Check the portal for the latest form, fee, documents and service timeline before applying; the portal has listed a seven-day service limit, subject to complete documents and current service rules.
Documents to keep ready
- Aadhaar or other accepted identity proof
- Proof of age/date of birth
- Maharashtra residence proof
- Recent photograph, if the application asks for one
- Mobile number and any supporting documents shown on Aaple Sarkar
Names and dates should match across documents. Never share an OTP with an agent. Use the official portal or ask the local Tahsildar office/Setu service centre about the current application process.
Health cover: Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and Maharashtra MJPJAY
Maharashtra operates the integrated Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY framework. Maharashtra’s scheme information describes cashless hospital care through empanelled hospitals, with cover up to ₹5 lakh per family per year on a floater basis for eligible residents and listed packages. Treatment is limited to covered procedures, package conditions, hospital participation and pre-authorisation rules. It does not mean every treatment, medicine, hospital or bill is automatically free.
Before admission or a planned procedure, ask the hospital’s Ayushman/MJPJAY help desk to verify the patient’s eligibility, the exact procedure/package, whether the hospital and specialist are empanelled for it, pre-authorisation approval, what expenses are included, and whether any non-package charges may apply. Ask for the approved package and any patient payment in writing. Keep the scheme card, Aadhaar, ration card or other eligibility documents requested by the desk, and all reports/referrals. Confirm current package details on the official MJPJAY website.
Special Ayushman cover for people aged 70 and above
Under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card expansion, all people aged 70 or older can seek PM-JAY coverage regardless of income, subject to Aadhaar-based e-KYC and scheme rules. Eligible seniors receive a distinct card. The national scheme describes up to ₹5 lakh annual cover; where a household is already covered under PM-JAY, the 70+ member(s) have a separate additional top-up pool of up to ₹5 lakh for themselves. Ask the scheme desk how this interacts with Maharashtra’s integrated scheme and any other cover, and do not assume two separate limits can be added together.
Start from the National Health Authority PM-JAY information or ask an empanelled hospital/Ayushman help desk for e-KYC and eligibility checking. A card or eligibility record is not a guarantee that a particular procedure is approved: the hospital still has to confirm the package and obtain required approval.
Maharashtra schemes for older adults
Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (central assistive-device scheme)
This central scheme is different from Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Vayoshree. It supports eligible Indian seniors aged 60 or above who have age-related disability or infirmity and meet the listed BPL or monthly-income criteria (the Ministry page lists income up to ₹15,000). Eligible assistive devices may be distributed through government-authorised assessment/distribution camps; it is not a general cash grant. Check current camps and eligibility with the district Social Welfare office or the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Shravanbal Seva Rajya Nivruttivetan Yojana
This state pension is for qualifying residents aged 65 or above who meet the listed low-income or BPL criteria. The Maharashtra Social Justice Department page lists a pension of ₹1,500 per month. Applications are handled through the Collector/Tahsildar or Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana branch/Talathi channel. Income and BPL documentation apply; confirm the current criteria and amount with the local office or official scheme page.
Chief Minister Vayoshree Scheme
The Maharashtra scheme page lists eligibility from age 65, Aadhaar, annual family income up to ₹2 lakh, and one-time assistance of ₹3,000 for eligible assistive devices or related wellbeing support. Conditions include restrictions on receiving the same device free from another source within the prior three years. Application windows and implementation can vary, so check with the district Assistant Commissioner, Social Welfare, and read the official Vayoshree page before spending money or applying through an intermediary.
Chief Minister Tirth Darshan Scheme
This is a pilgrimage assistance scheme for eligible Maharashtra residents aged 60 or above. The state page lists an annual family-income ceiling of ₹2.5 lakh and support up to ₹30,000 paid to the selected tour operator for an approved pilgrimage. It is not an unrestricted cash payment; destinations and application windows are decided by the department. Ask the district Assistant Commissioner, Social Welfare, or see the official scheme page.
MSRTC bus concession
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s published concession chart lists a 50% fare concession for Maharashtra residents aged 65–75 and free travel for residents above 75, subject to the current scheme conditions. Carry original age and Maharashtra-residency proof and confirm the concession and accepted proof before booking, especially for online or electronic-ticket journeys. Check the MSRTC concession chart for current terms.
Post Office Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme (SCSS)
SCSS is a government-backed small-savings option for eligible older investors, not a grant or free benefit. It has eligibility, deposit limits, lock-in/withdrawal rules and a government-notified interest rate that can change by quarter. Compare the current rate and terms before investing, and use the India Post savings schemes page or an authorised bank/Post Office. Avoid relying on old rate screenshots or unsolicited “guaranteed return” offers.
Income-tax deductions for senior citizens
Tax benefits depend on the taxpayer’s age, regime, income type, eligible expenses and the rules for that assessment year. The Income Tax Department’s current guidance describes provisions such as section 80TTB for qualifying deposit interest and section 80D/80DDB for eligible health-insurance premiums or specified medical expenses/diseases, with conditions and limits. These deductions may not be available under every tax regime or circumstance. Review the Income Tax Department guidance for AY 2026–27 and consult a tax professional for a personal return.
Railway employee or pensioner families: separate medical benefits
Railway medical facilities and the railway medical card are employment/retirement benefits for eligible railway employees, spouses and dependants. They are separate from the Maharashtra Senior Citizen Certificate and Ayushman card. For a non-emergency referral to a private hospital, ask the Railway hospital/medical authority about referral, approval and reimbursement rules before treatment. In an emergency, carry the valid railway medical identity/RELHS card and contact the nearest railway health unit as soon as possible. Rules depend on beneficiary status and railway instructions.
Where to ask for help
- Senior Citizen Certificate: Aaple Sarkar portal or local Tahsildar/Setu service centre.
- Ayushman/MJPJAY: Ayushman help desk at an empanelled hospital; official MJPJAY/NHA portals.
- State pensions and social-welfare schemes: District Social Welfare office, Tahsildar or the scheme’s official state page.
- Senior-citizen support and distress: Elderline 14567 provides information, guidance and support for older people, including intervention pathways for abuse or rescue concerns.
Legal protection and helpline
The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 provides legal routes concerning maintenance and protection from neglect or abandonment; procedures are handled under state rules, including designated tribunals. For guidance about a specific case, contact the district administration or a qualified legal-aid service. Elderline 14567 offers information, guidance, emotional support and field intervention pathways for older people, including abuse or rescue concerns. See the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
